Types of Germination

Seed germination can be defines as the fundamental process by which different plant species grow from a single seed in to a plant. Seed germination can be three types :

  • Epigeal germination : - In this type of germination the cotyledons are first pushed above the ground by the rapid elongation of hypocotyl. Cotyledons soon turn green and start photosynthesizing, e.g. Phaseolus(beans),  Ricinus (castor), Dolichos (bean).
  • Hypogeal germination : - Here, the epicotyl elongates faster than hypocotyl at the time of seed germination. This keeps cotyledons inside the soil or may bring them just above the soil surface, e.g., Pea, Mango, Coconut, Maize, Rice etc.
  • Viviparous germination (Vivipary):Germination of seeds inside the fruit, that is still attached to the parent tree is called vivipary, e.g., Agave.
